A Representational Impressionistic painter, John’s paintings are distinguished by their varied brush strokes and rich color. They hold particular appeal for those who enjoy the tradition of open-air painting.
To John, the essence of the painting begins on the scene. “I will use oil, watercolor, gouache or pencil, as long as I record what excited me most about the scene,” he says. “I like to focus on surprises — something unexpected, an object of beauty that has been overlooked. Sometimes I find it in the commonplace, sometimes in the unusual.”
John Holub paints on location at a number of different places throughout the year. While traveling, he gathers ideas and information to be developed further at his studio in Winthrop, Maine, an area of lakes, streams and rolling farmland in the central part of the state. In addition to the Caribbean, John’s painting locations have included the Tuscany region of Italy and Monhegan Island off the Maine coast. Future plans have him returning to the Virgin Islands as well as painting in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Russia.
A native of Long Island, New York, John has always been interested in art. Even as a child, he spent much of his time painting and drawing. Years later, after a tour of duty in the United States Air Force and a move to Maine, he finally decided to pursue his childhood fascination. He began with pen-and-ink renderings and then developed his skills as a watercolor painter. He has since gone on to gouache and oil.
By taking part in workshops and studying intensively on his own, John has taken his talent to a high level. He now works mostly in oil.
John captures both the exciting natural beauty of the Caribbean and the peaceful tranquility of the tropical lifestyle in his paintings.
