MotionScapes are intentionally blurred images of landscapes, seascapes and other views. They are impressionistic images that stress the beauty of light, color, line and shape, rather than the details of the scene. Landscapes are “nothing but impressions” said Monet, because the light and color are constantly changing.
"I hope my images convey a sense of nature’s splendor and serenity. I hope their blurred ambiguity can help make familiar landscapes and seascapes, more intelligible. My intention is that my approach encourages the viewer to attach their own meaning to the images thereby realizing their own artistic imagination." - Bob Lefferts
While I have always been inspired by impressionist art, I never fully recognized the potential of photography to capture impressionistic views until I met and saw the beautiful landscapes of Alison Shaw, a superb Martha’s Vineyard photographer. I have adapted her film technique to my work using digital photography and processing. MotionScapes are the product of applying intentional camera movement and adjustments --and luck-- to scenes that possess the right combination of light, color, and form.
My MotionScapes were shown for the first time at the Spinnato Gallery in Long Island, NY in December of 2006 and will be shown at the deCordova Gallery in Greenport NY and at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton NY in the spring of 2007. The MotionScapes capture scenes at a variety of times of day in locations known for “artists’ light,”-- the Hamptons, Cape Cod, the Caribbean and Italy.
I am delighted that Claire Ochoa and her exquisite Gallery St. Thomas have selected these images to show at Alexander’s Bella Blu restaurant.
