To create her artwork, Aimee uses layer upon layer of exotic and handmade papers that she collects in her world travels.

Her pieces are inspired by nature and the visions or images from her dreams. Her sensual, mysterious collages fuse natural elements and materials with the passion and joy of the artist’s spirit during the creative process. The result is art that, over time, continues to intrigue the viewer with new revelations of itself.

“I rarely have a preconceived notion of the finished piece in mind. Maybe I have a wish as to the colors or forms,” says Trayser. “ The collage or painting evolves as the paint dries and the papers mold themselves into these expressions of a colorful vision.”

Aimee Trayser has made the island of St. John her home since 1982. From the windows of her studio on lush Bordeaux Mountain, she gazes at three beautiful neighboring islands emerging from the turquoise sea. Surrounded by mango trees, orchids, and the spicy aroma of bay rum groves, it is easy to lose herself in the creation of her evocative images of the island spirit.

Her favorite papers are those rich with fibers and textures that enrich the form and deepen the emotional impact of the finished piece. Aimee uses rich golden gessoes, liquid watercolors, water-based inks, pure acrylic pigments, mica particles, metallic powders, and opalescent and luminescent paints. Torn silk, raw silk and gauze are often used to create body. An acrylic gel medium archives the entire piece.

Aimee explores the mystery of the ordinary by taking everyday subjects and landscapes a few steps beyond reality. “I like to think that my art is infused with something more than the immediately visible,” she says. Aimee often hesitates to title her pieces, knowing that her skilled but soulful collages will sing a different melody to each of us.
